-please be sure to return the yellow poetry duotangs each Monday. If you forgot today please send it tomorrow!
We will be celebrating Halloween on October 31st. You are allowed to come to school dressed in your costume. The morning will be a regular work day, and the afternoon will be reserved for a party. Please use your best judgement with costumes, and no weapons at school.
Our Words of the week are:
my, all, said, little there, out
Please try to practice these a little bit each evening. It is most important that your child is able to read these words so that they can find them on the word wall! Once they have learned to read them by sight please practice spelling these words. Ask your child to tell you which two words are "jail words"? Why do we call them this?
Today we:
-practiced our new words of the week and poems of the week.
-had a sharing circle where we shared about our weekends.
-wrote in our journals where we tried to "hit the bullseye by using our best kid spelling, remembering finger spaces, using the word wall as a tool and matching our picture to our words.
-had a grade two superstorm where we read a fiction book called "Pumpkin Days, Pumpkin Nights". Can your child tell you the difference between a fiction and a non-fiction book? Next, we brainstormed questions that we wonder about pumpkins. Mrs. Morin and I were AMAZED by all of the wonderful questions that the grade one students wondered about. You can see some of our brainstorming at the top of this post!
-did our daily calendar routine on the smart board and white boards. Can your child count aloud by 2's, 5's and 10's. It is fun to practice this in the car when you are all driving somewhere!
-had music with Mrs. Dennill.
-did pumpkin math where we estimated and then discovered the height and number of vertical lines on our pumpkins. Can your child tell you what vertical means? How about horizontal? How about estimate? Is it okay if your estimate is different than your actual?
-watched two short video clips and discussed the meaning of primary, secondary and tertiary colors? Check out these clips in the Science section of our blog?
Please and Thank you:
-A huge thank you to Grace and her family for donating the pumpkins for Pumpkin Math this week!
We could really use more volunteers each morning at 8:30-am in order to make our home reading program a success. Especially on Monday mornings! Please let our room coordinator, Leanne Trevis know if you are able to make it in. You do not need to come each week, any day that you can make it is always appreciated! Any parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or friends with volunteer clearance are welcome!
Dear Students and family members of Prince of Wales school,
Mrs. McKay’s POWer hour is all about giving back and helping other. The first group of people that we have chosen to help live right in our city. We will be collecting winter coats, boots, hats, scarves, mitts, and snow pants that are gently used. These items will be for Syrian Refugees from Keeler school in Calgary, where Ms. Georg is now teaching. The refugees have left their homes with nothing but themselves. (Think about it if you did not have a warm winter coat walking out into the snow). Please bring in sizes for age 4 and up. Please help out! Donations can be brought to Mrs. McKay’s classroom,
Please have all donations here by November 4 2016
