Important Information
-If you did not return your purple Symphony field trip notice today(or at conferences) please return it by Wednesday at the latest.
-If you did not have a chance to print out or write out your families traditional recipe that your child is bringing to our brunch PLEASE SEND IT TOMORROW! The write up about this can be found below, on my blog from last Wednesday or on the email sent this weekend. We are doing many writing and drawing activities with it this week to prepare for the brunch. The first activity starts tomorrow so it is essential that all students have it with them!
-please remember to return library books each Monday for our book exchange time.
-After hearing many questions at conferences I reinforced with all students today that I expect three things done for homework each night (schedule permitting):
1) Read a book from your home reading bag/practice sight words.
2) Practice the words of the week.
3) Answer the blog question of the day.
Thank you for helping to reinforce these important homework habits at home! I reminded the students that the best way to improve their reading is to READ, READ, READ!
Words of the week are:
girl, her, turn, hurt, ever, every, first, other
We are continuing discussing the idea of the "Bossy R". This week we are discussing the sound made by er, ir and ur in words. Please practice these words a little each day. It is most important that they can be recognized by sight to read them. Once your child can read them please practice spelling them. Please continue to review the Bossy R letter pattern videos under word work on the blog.
Today we:
-started a new round of literacy stations. All literacy stations are pirate themed this week in honour of our Bossy R word work!
-played a game called, Pip, Squeak, Wilber in gym.
-watched video clips from the work work section of the blog about the bossy r-er, ir and ur
sound.
-learned our new words of the week by sounding out, body spelling and chanting our words.
-learned a math game called more or less to help us learn our 2more/2 less facts. In partners one partner holds a spinner and asks "2 more or 2 less?". The other partner chooses one. The first partner spins the spinner and the second person must write down the number sentence. Then the first partner checks for backwards number and to see if the answer is correct. This can be played at home with dice if you don't have a spinner. the next step in the game (which we will learn tomorrow) is to have one spinner and two other players racing to see who can write down the number sentence correctly first!
-had our library book exchange (many students forgot their books-please remember these each Monday!!!)
-had music with Mrs. Dennill.
-had a singing superstorm with all grade ones to end our day! We are practicing for the performance at the Atria Retirement Residence on February 13!
In Mail Pockets:
-February calendar (pink-oldest and only)
-February book orders (came home last week-many of the free book coupons sent home in holiday cards have not been returned yet. If your child has not spent theirs yet, please apply it to this order!)
-
Please and Thank you!
-Thank you to the families who have sent in their recipes and Philharmonic field trip forms.
Thank you for returning school Library books each Monday (our scheduled weekly exchange time is Monday afternoon).
Family Tradition Recipes

We have done some initial reflection and journaling in class, but please send your child to school with a copy of their recipe for next Monday, January 29th.
