Happy Birthday Winter!
Please return poetry books tomorrow if they are still at home!
Correction to field trip notice-The Calgary Humane Society field trip is next Tuesday January 16, Wednesday was written in error. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday!
Words of the week are:
my, by, why, fly, try, happy, pretty, funny, family
All of these words contain the "sneaky, sly Y" at the end of the word. The sneaky, sly Y sneaks up and make the vowel sound at the end of words. Y says i at the end of a one beat word and Y says e at the end of a word with two or more syllables. Can your child tell you how the two sounds that y makes at the end of a word? Please practice these words a little each day. It is most important that they can be recognized by sight to read them. Once your child can read them please practice spelling them. Please continue to review the "Y as a vowel" letter pattern videos under word work on the blog.
Today we:
-started our day with gymnastics. We used the mats in the gym to explore high, medium and low movements and levels with our bodies.
-did word detective with our poem of the week.
-had art with Mrs. Ferrari. We worked on developing a line vocabulary -- we tried out squiggly, geometric, curved, thick, thin, diagonal, horizontal, vertical, and cross-hatched lines, and began an art piece with this variety of lines.
-read a book called The Golden Rule By Ilene Cooper. This wonderful picture book discusses what the golden rule is, what it really means and how you can live by it.
-continued practicing the strategy of one more/one less by playing a game called Around the World. Please continue to practice one more/one less of numbers up to 20 at home using playing cards, numeral cards or dice.
-had a wonderful presentation given by a guest speaker from The Mustard Seed teaching us about empathy and care and how to be good citizens within our community.
- finished our afternoon as a whole grade one group learning two songs about love. We will be singing these songs to the residents of Atria Retirement Residence when we visit them on February 13.
