Words of the week are:
or, for, are, car, more, smart
This week we are discussing the idea of the "Bossy R" and the sounds made by or and ar in words. Please practice these words a little each day. It is most important that they can be recognized by sight to read them. Once your child can read them please practice spelling them. Please continue to review the Bossy R letter pattern videos under word work on the blog.
Today we:
-had catch up time to finish up our work from literacy stations.
-were word detectives and hunted for words of the week in our poetry.
-completed "Me As A Learner" Happy face checklists where we did some self assessments reflecting about what we are doing well in as a learner and the areas that we need to continue to grow in.
-had a wonderful afternoon with visiting expert, cookbook author Julie Van Rosendaal, who spoke to us about traditions and recipes to help us prepare for our family traditions brunch in a few short weeks.
In Mail Pockets:
-February book orders
-cards from our buddies in Kansas.
Please and Thank you!
-a huge thank you to Kate's Grandma and Abigail's Mom for coming in for reading support today.
Thank you for returning school Library books each Monday (our scheduled weekly exchange time is Monday afternoon).
- If interested in ordering the Edo Fun Lunch (Jan 31), please ensure orders are confirmed online by this Friday, January 26.

Family Tradition Recipes
Please talk with your child about a recipe that is a tradition in your family -- it could be cultural, seasonal, passed down through generations, or just something special to/enjoyed by your family! We are exploring family recipes as a social studies-based writing project, culminating in a Family Traditions Brunch on February 9th (8:00 am). We have done some initial reflection and journaling in class, but please send your child to school with a copy of their recipe for next Monday, January 29th.
Save the Date:
Grade one will be enjoying a Family Traditions Brunch on Friday, February 9 at 8:00 am. Families are welcome to attend! Please see recipe information above to help your child prepare toward this project.
Family Literacy Day
On January 26, 2018 celebrate Family Literacy Day with the Calgary Public Library by joining the province-wide Read for 15 Challenge. Encourage everyone in your family to read for 15 minutes. Report your reading online (https://calgarylibrary.ca/read-for-15/) or by tagging @calgarylibrary and #Readfor15yyc on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram — for a chance to win new books for your school library and a Book Truck visit. Help Calgary claim the title of Alberta’s most readerly community.
