Our Words of the week are:
it is in at am us up
This week we are continuing to focus on the short vowel sounds. Please watch the short vowel videos if you have not had a chance to do so already. Please review what sound each of the short vowels make and practice spelling these words at home this week!
Today we:
- started our day with Music with Mrs. Dennill.
-played a game called "If I know, then I know..." for word work. Using the words of the week we made three letter words. For example "I I know us, then I know bus!" Try this fun game at home with all of our words of the week!
-worked on Grow Calgary Sketchbook pages, reflecting on our day yesterday.
-had a wonderful "Snackerstorm" with the other grade one classes where we read the book Stolen Words By Melanie Florence. This story is about a little girl who comes home from school one day and asks her grandpa how to say something in his Cree language. He is sad that he can't teach her. He tells her that his words were stolen from him when he was taken to live at a residential school. The girl then sets out to help her grandpa find his language again.
-learned about the reasons for Orange Shirt Day. Can your child tell you which people in Canada are aboriginal people? Who is Phyllis? What happened to her at the residential school? There are videos you can check out all about Orange shirt day in the Social Studies Section of the blog. We came up with lots of creative ideas of what we can do if we don't have an orange shirt. For example: use fabric markers and colour an old t-shirt, use fabric paint to paint an old t-shirt, draw a small t-shirt on paper and pin it to our shirts. We are hoping every child in the class will wear an orange t-shirt of some kind tomorrow!
-did our daily calendar time. Can your child use a strategy of drawing dots or counting up to fill in the following number sentences: 8+____=10, 6+____=9, _______+5=7.
In Mail Pockets:
Power hour notices (green)-please return notice by Monday October 2.
