As part of the social studies curriculum, grade ones are exploring family and cultural traditions. We would love for students to bring in their own family seasonal traditions to share. This might take the form of a photograph, decoration, story, or book, just to name a few ideas, or a special person that is part of your family traditions. Please bring your tradition to share and explain tomorrow!!!
Grade One Celebration
On the last morning of school before the break (Friday, December 16), grade ones will enjoy a Family Traditions potluck brunch to celebrate the season! Part of our social studies curriculum is understanding and appreciating traditions that shape our identities and communities. Students are encouraged to bring a dish that is a tradition for their family, along with a small explanation or artifact (story, photo, etc.) that helps tell about the tradition. It can be a dish special to Christmas, unique to your cultural heritage, or simply a family favourite. Family members are welcome to join us for the brunch, which will be followed by a Christmas sing-along with Paulo. We will enjoy a cozy morning of sharing, traditions, and seasonal songs!
Important Information
-Please return poetry books if you have not done so already.
-please remember to return your home reading bags and word rings each day!
Our Words of the week are:
children cheer each much such
Please practice these a little over the weekend and check out the "ch" videos in word work under the blog!
Today We:
-did rhyme time in our poetry.
- -reviewed the difference between needs and wants and discussed how lucky we are that all of our needs are being met. Next we discussed how there are many people in our city, country and around the world who are not having their needs met. Finally, students wrote a letter to Santa with their wishes for children around the world who are not having their needs met.
- -did our daily calendar time.
- -had French. Please be sure to check out Madame Pallesen's Blog at http://sgpallesen.weebly.com/blog
- -continued to work on our conservation of number page in the math journals. Ask your child what conservation of number means and how they could show conservation with the number 10?
- -did some work on subatizing of numbers. Subitizing is the ability to 'see' a small amount of objects and know how many there are without counting. This is a very important skill in math. We watched a few videos where we need to subatize (found in the math section of the blog) and also looked at a great subatizing websight.
- -Continued to discuss Diwali. Ask your child what Diwali is? Which country celebrates this? Why do many Canadians celebrate Diwali? What traditions are in Diwali?
Please and Thank you:
-a huge thank you to Connor's mom for coming in for sight words this morning. Many students had left their sight word rings at home today. Please ensure that they are returning the rings in their book bags each day!
-If you can please spare a half hour any morning feel free to stop by and support our reading program!
